Ian oversees Cal Poly’s Ocean Observing Laboratory under Dr. Ryan Walter and Dr. Alexis Pasulka. His interests include the ecology and dynamics of phytoplankton and harmful algal blooms, long term ocean observation data sets (“underwater weather”), HF Radar and sea surface currents, autonomous aerial and underwater vehicles, scuba diving and all the technology that supports those platforms. Data can be visualized at Morro Bay and San Luis Bay underwater data and HF Radar Surface Currents.
Directions to The Cal Poly Pier
From the South
- Travel north on route 101 to the Avila Beach Dr. Exit.
- Take a left and Follow signs to Port San Luis.
- After passing Avila Beach on the left, go over a bridge crossing San Luis Creek.
- Less than 1/4 mile past the bridge on the left is a gate along a fenced enclosure.
- This is the base of the pier facility and home of the Cal Poly Marine Science Center
From the North
- Travel south on route 101 to the San Luis Drive Exit.
- Take a right on San Luis Drive for 2 miles.
- Cross over San Luis Creek Bridge and take a Right onto Avila Beach Dr.
- Follow signs to Port San Luis.
- After passing Avila Beach on the left, go over a bridge crossing San Luis Creek.
- Less than 1/4 mile past the bridge on the left is a gate along a fenced enclosure.
- This is the base of the pier facility and home of the Cal Poly Marine Science Center
Directions to Cal Poly Campus
From the South
- Travel north on route 101 to San Luis Obispo.
- Go through much of San Luis Obispo and exit at the Grand Avenue/Cal Poly exit
- Turn left onto Grand Avenue and go (uphill) approximately 1/4 mile to the south entrance of the campus.
- Ahead on your right is the Cal Poly Visitor Information Center.
- Here you can obtain a parking permit, campus map, and a warm greeting!
- The Marine Facilities are in Science North Building 53 (see PDF Map) and the Marine Faculty are in Clyde Fisher Science Building 33.
From the North, Option 1
- Travel south on route 101 to San Luis Obispo.
- As you approach San Luis Obispo, Exit the Fwy at Monterey Street (the first exit in SLO).
- Make a right turn, then an immediate left turn onto the frontage road (you will be going the same direction you were on the Fwy).
- Go approximately 3 blocks to Grand Ave.
- Turn right (going uphill) and go approximately 1/4 mile to the south entrance of the campus.
- Ahead on your right is the Cal Poly Visitor Information Center.
- Here you can obtain a parking permit, campus map, and a warm greeting!
- The Marine Facilities are in Science North Building 53 (see PDF Map) and the Marine Faculty are in Clyde Fisher Science Building 33.
From the North, Option 2 (From Monterey via Scenic Route 1, The Pacific Coast Highway)
- Travel south on US Highway 1.
- As you approach San Luis Obispo the first stop light on the edge of town is Highland Avenue.
- Turn left at Highland to enter the North-West entrance to the campus.
- Follow Highland Ave as it goes under the train trestle and into the lower parking lot area. Continue straight until you reach a stop sign.
- Turn right and go to the next stop sign.
- At the next stop sign turn left onto North Perimeter Drive and proceed until you reach the third stop sign (you will be going down hill).
- Turn left and proceed to the south entrance of the campus where you will find the Campus Information Center.
- Here you can obtain a parking permit, campus map, and a warm greeting!
