Meeting 1 Recap - November 29, 2023

At the community education workshop held on November 29, 2023, Cal Poly professors, Anastasia Telesetsky and Ben Ruttenberg, began the meeting by sharing the purpose behind Sea Grant's collaboration with Cal Poly. This collaboration aims to create space for community learning about the proposed offshore wind developments along California's Central Coast in the Morro Bay Wind Energy Area.

Next, expert faculty members from Cal Poly's College of Engineering, Mason Medizade and Patrick Lemieux, delivered presentations about the distinctions between land and offshore wind turbines, the designs of floating wind turbines, and the unique challenges posed by floating offshore wind turbines on the Central Coast. The anticipated technical challenges relate to ocean depth and turbine size.

To conclude, representatives from each wind development company provided overviews of their organizations. They shared notable experiences in renewable energy, highlighting achievements in both fixed and floating offshore wind projects. Each of their presentations included firm commitments to transparency, active stakeholder engagement, and meaningful support for local communities. All of the wind developers are in the very early stages of their project permitting process timelines, and when the processes are complete and permits are issued, they expect to begin construction and fabrication after 2030.
