The coastal marine habitat in San Luis Obispo Bay has been severely compromised by the introduction of hydrocarbons into the water column and sub-tidal sediments. Furthermore, rapid increases in bacterial load and nutrient concentrations causing toxic phytoplankton blooms from San Luis Creek compound the problem and are seriously threatening the vitality of the coastal habitat. Given that good water quality in the coastal marine environment is critical to the health of the marine flora and fauna, ocal sport fishing interests, recreation and genera tourism, this project will monitor changes in meteorological and water quality parameters as well as hydrocarbon concentration. Continuous monitoring of these and other variables in San Luis Obispo Bay provides valuable real-time information from which correlations to pollutants can be made. In addition, this information will be available for use by the public, local businesses, county officials and educators.
